Japan has released the official list of 16 occupations in which foreigners can work under the country's Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa programme.
The announcement was made recently and reported by Legit.ng, sparking interest among Nigerians and other foreign nationals looking to work abroad.
According to the official release from Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the SSW visa was established in April 2019 to welcome capable specialists from overseas to fill labour shortages in key industries.

Building cleaning management
Manufacture of industrial products
Construction industry
Shipbuilding and ship machinery industry
Automobile repair and maintenance
Aviation industry
Accommodation industry
Agriculture
Fishery and aquaculture industries
Manufacture of food and beverages
Food service industry
Automobile transportation business
Railway
Forestry
Wood industry
The government said the spread of sectors reflects Japan's effort to plug workforce gaps across both urban and rural industries. Fields such as nursing care and food service address growing domestic demand, while sectors like shipbuilding, forestry, and railway point to the country's need for technical labour.
To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old, possess the necessary occupational skills, and pass Japanese language proficiency tests. The four newest sectors - Automobile transportation, Railway, Forestry, and Wood industry - were added in 2024.
