Nigeria vs South Africa Again? Why This Rivalry Is Hurting Us and How We Can Glow Together
Today, September 30th, 2026, the tension between two African giants is trending again.
If you open X (Twitter), Facebook, or TikTok, you will see it: Nigerians and South Africans dragging each other. But this time, it's not about football or music. It's serious.
Anti-migrant groups in South Africa have set today, September 30th, as a new deadline for undocumented foreigners to leave. Because of this, the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has told all Nigerians living in South Africa to stay vigilant, avoid crowded areas, and always have their ID with them.
Nigeria's parliament has even suspended official visits to South Africa.
As someone who believes in glowing together, this thing pain me.
*Why Do Nigeria and South Africa Always Clash?*
Let's be honest, we are like two big brothers in one house.
1. *We are both giants.* Nigeria is Africa's most populous country. South Africa is Africa's most industrialized. We both want to lead.
2. *We compete everywhere.* From AFCON to Afrobeats vs Amapiano, from business to who get more swag.
3. *Pain is being projected.* When jobs are scarce and prices are high in South Africa, some people look for who to blame. Sadly, migrants, especially visible Nigerians, become the target. The same thing happens in Nigeria too.
The painful fact is that nearly 100 Nigerians have been reported to have died in xenophobic-related incidents since 2022. No family deserves that.
*3 Lessons This Rivalry Teaches Us About Life*
As we dey watch this gist, make we learn something for our own life:
*1. Comparison Kills Glow:* Nigeria and South Africa keep comparing themselves. In your own life, stop comparing your journey to your neighbour's. Your glow is different. Comparison will only bring hate and jealousy.
*2. Unity Is Real Power:* Imagine if Nigeria's population and South Africa's infrastructure worked together? We would be unstoppable. In your own circle, you go farther when you collaborate than when you compete.
*3. Speak Up, But With Love:* South African President Ramaphosa himself said his government rejects xenophobia and discrimination. It takes courage to stand for what's right, even when your own people are shouting something else. Learn to speak up for love, even when hate is louder.
*To My People In South Africa Today:*
If you are a Nigerian in South Africa, please be safe today:
- Avoid protest areas in Johannesburg, Durban, and Pretoria
- Stay indoors if possible
- Keep your documents close
- Check on your fellow Nigerian neighbour
And to my South African brothers and sisters reading this, not all Nigerians are bad, just like not all South Africans are xenophobic. We have good and bad everywhere. Don't let social media use you.
We are both Africans. We both want a better life. We both love music, food, and football.
Instead of Nigeria vs South Africa, what if it becomes Nigeria _and_ South Africa?
