Independence Day 2026: President Tinubu Promises Lower Cost of Living, Highlights Economic Growth

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his Independence Day national broadcast on October 1, 2026, has assured Nigerians that his administration is working to bring down the high cost of living across the country.

In his address this morning, the President said the government will focus on reducing production and transportation costs nationwide, which he described as the main drivers of inflation.

According to President Tinubu, after nearly three years of economic reforms, Nigeria is moving from a period of correcting economic distortions to a period of shared prosperity. He rejected calls for a return to fuel subsidy, saying the reforms are beginning to yield results.

The President also highlighted key achievements of his administration:

- Over four percent economic growth recorded in 2026
- Over $6 billion in non-oil exports in 2025
- Plans to create more jobs through irrigation projects and expanded social investment programmes

Tinubu noted that while challenges remain, the cost of living remains the central focus of his administration as Nigeria marks its Independence Day.
