He Spent 11 Years In Prison Rather Than Reveal Where $50 Million In Shipwreck Gold Is Hidden
THIS MAN CHOSE 11 YEARS IN PRISON OVER GIVING UP THE LOCATION OF $50M IN GOLD.
His name is Tommy Thompson. A brilliant research scientist from Ohio. And he found the richest shipwreck in American history.
In 1857, the SS Central America, known as the "Ship of Gold," sank in a hurricane off the coast of South Carolina. On board were 425 passengers and 30,000 pounds of California Gold Rush gold meant for New York banks. The ship was lost for 131 years, 7,000 feet deep in the Atlantic Ocean.
In 1988, Tommy Thompson built the robots, raised the money, and found it.
He was celebrated as a hero. He recovered thousands of gold bars, gold ingots, and rare coins. One single gold ingot later sold for $8 Million. He sold about $50 Million worth of gold.
Then he disappeared.
His investors sued him in 2005. They said he never paid them. Thompson went on the run. For 2 years, the FBI hunted him.
In January 2015, US Marshals found him hiding in a Hilton hotel in Boca Raton, Florida, living under a fake name.
A federal judge ordered him to do one simple thing: Reveal where 500 missing gold coins are. The coins are valued at about $2.5 Million to $50 Million depending on the report.
Thompson refused.
He told the court he forgot. He said the gold was in a trust in Belize. He said it went to legal fees. He never gave a real location.
So the judge held him in civil contempt of court. That is not a normal prison sentence. The judge said: "You can leave the moment you tell us where the gold is."
He never told them.
He was fined $1,000 per day. He spent 11 YEARS in federal prison, from 2015 to March 2026. One of the longest contempt cases in US history.
On March 4, 2026, at age 73, he was finally released. And till today, he has still not revealed where the gold is.
Where is the treasure? No one knows. But Tommy Thompson chose prison over betraying its location.
