Andrew Garfield Reveals Fela Kuti Inspired His Spider-Man Moves
Hollywood to Africa! British actor Andrew Garfield has revealed that the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti inspired his performance as Spider-Man.
The Spider-Man star disclosed this in a viral interview on YouTube show Track Star - "Testing Andrew Garfield's Music Knowledge".
Garfield said he creates a special playlist for every character he plays. When he first landed the role of Peter Parker for _The Amazing Spider-Man_ in 2012, he started listening to Fela.
According to him, Fela's rhythm and revolutionary spirit helped him understand Spider-Man better.
> "I create a playlist for every character I play, which is a lovely fun thing to do anyway. So I started listening to Fela Kuti when I first got Spider-Man, and there was something about the sound and the rhythm that was really useful to me for that character," Garfield said.
> "There was something about suddenly being in touch with the body, but also justice-seeking, because obviously he was a revolutionary figure."
> "And the way that I moved in that film, in the suit, has some inspiration from Fela and his music."
Garfield explained that he wanted to reflect the power in Fela's music in Spider-Man's movements. The song playing during the interview was Fela's 1975 classic "Water No Get Enemy" from the album _Expensive Shit_.
Andrew Garfield played Spider-Man in _The Amazing Spider-Man_ (2012), _The Amazing Spider-Man 2_ (2014) and returned in _Spider-Man: No Way Home_ (2021).
Nigerians on social media have reacted with excitement, saying Fela's influence has now reached the Marvel Universe.
